The Power of Intention: My Story, the Science, and a 30-Day Self-Love Challenge – Plus Amazing Giveaway!!!

The Power of Intention: My Story, the Science, and a 30-Day Self-Love Challenge

Yesterday, as I sat with my morning coffee, I set a simple intention: “Today, I will only focus on things that fuel me, not things that drain me.” It was a quiet moment, but it set the tone for my entire day.

Later that morning, I arrived at work to find someone had parked in front of my roller door, blocking my front step and disrupting the flow of my warehouse. In the past, this would have sent my stress levels soaring and really frustrated me. A team member was quite annoyed and all revved up by it and asked me “So, what are you going to do…?” – I could have met them in frustration and let the energy of frustration grow and ruin my morning, but instead, I paused, took a deep breath, and reminded myself and my team member of the intention I had set just hours before. Rather than letting frustration take over, I chose to stay calm and focus on what truly mattered.  Was it disruptive YES! If I focused on it would it drain me?  YES!!

So I focused on what I could control. I could control my reaction and  I chose calm over chaos.

The power of intention. The power of focus the power of mind over matter. I got on with my day.

Deliveries of large boxes squeezed through the front door, and when the driver returned, she was clearly embarrassed. I could have snapped, but instead, I smiled, reassured her, and even invited her in for a chat. That small act of kindness created a ripple of good energy—no harsh words, just two people navigating a tricky moment with grace and understanding. As it turned out her car had broken down on her way to work and she literally stopped on my doorstep. LOL!

This experience reminded me just how powerful setting an intention can be. It’s not about ignoring life’s challenges, but about choosing how we respond to them.

The Science Behind Setting Daily Intentions

You might wonder: is there real science behind this practice? The answer is yes.

  • Setting a daily intention helps focus your attention and reduces stress. Neuroscientists call this “selective attention”—by consciously deciding what you want to focus on, you filter out distractions and reduce mental clutter. This simple act can lower anxiety and help you feel more in control.
  • There’s also something called the Reticular Activating System (RAS) in your brain. This network of neurons acts like a filter, helping you notice opportunities and experiences that align with your intention. When you set an intention, your brain is primed to see what matters most, making it easier to act in ways that support your goals.
  • Intention-setting is also linked to better emotional regulation. Research shows that mindfulness practices, including setting intentions, can help you pause and respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively. Over time, this builds resilience and emotional strength.
  • In positive psychology, setting intentions increases motivation and self-efficacy—the belief in your own ability to make good choices. This sense of purpose and control boosts your confidence and overall wellbeing.
  • Finally, repeating intentions daily helps form new, healthy habits. Over time, these habits become automatic, supporting both your mental and emotional health. Many people also find that intentions related to gratitude and kindness increase happiness and overall life satisfaction.
